There’s this moment — I think we’ve all had it — when you’re sitting at your favourite Kneipe in Kreuzberg, nursing an Aperol Spritz, and suddenly you do the math in your head. The drink costs €8. The snacks cost €6. You’re out with friends, and instead of enjoying the moment, you’re doing budget calculations on a napkin with this beautiful glitter Kugelschreiber you bought the other day in DM (of course, you reeeeally needed that) when you actually just wanted to restock your ceramide face cream. 😅
The thing is: yes, sure you can afford it – you make decent money, and also yes, you’ve got savings. But somewhere along the way, we get this idea that being financially responsible means saying no to the things that make us feel alive. Hm, I am not here to say that this isn’t partially true, as, of course, you cannot just spend your money on everything you desire just in this very moment.
But, there is a but… — going strictly without everything you actually want— that’s also not financial health. That’s just… deprivation with a spreadsheet.
So what do I mean by real financial health? It’s knowing exactly where your money goes and making sure some of it goes toward the things that make you feel genuinely rich. And no, not with a ‘someday-attitude’, but now or at least, let’s say: Today? 🤗
The Reframe ref. Money That Changes Everything
I know many people who approach budgeting like it’s a punishment — and sure, I get it. It’s not really sexy, for one thing. There’s always this slight feeling that I need to hold myself back from something I really want. Seriously, who actually enjoys that? 🤔
Sometimes it goes deeper than just “ugh, responsibility.”
Maybe it feels like a backlash to your childhood, when your money mindset was formed and spending used to feel forbidden. Money was maybe either something you didn’t talk about, or it was always not enough, or yeah – maybe you manifested that only certain people deserved to have money. And now, every time you budget, you might be fighting that old story without even realising it. (speaking from experience… 😬).
We restrict, we deny, we feel like we’re managing money rather than living with it. And yeah, maybe that works for a minute — but it doesn’t stick because humans aren’t wired to live in permanent scarcity mode.
So let’s come at it from a different angle: What if we flipped that?
Sooo, instead of asking “Can I afford this?” we asked, “Do I want to allocate my money here?”
Because that’s what financial sovereignty actually is — the freedom to choose where your euros go, including the ones you spend on joy. 💛
That shift — from “I can’t have this” to “I’m choosing to invest in this” — changes everything.
Suddenly, that Aperol isn’t a guilty indulgence, but maybe a planned part of your financial life? In terms of “This is my going-out budget I can spend on my little treats after a hard week full of work”. You budgeted for it as your own, and hey, this is how you enjoy it without the internal monologue.
Keep in mind, though: This all doesn’t mean you suddenly get to spend on everything you want – and that we should just have a ‘yolo-attitude’ – might work in some cases, but I would say… rather not 😂.
You still need to be thoughtful about what you can actually allocate, what your priorities really are, and where the money’s actually gonna come from – just to be real to yourself.
We will dive into exactly how to figure that out in the next section, but first: breathe. You are on your way to just learning a different way to think about money – and that’s great. 💛
The Luxury Mindset Isn’t About Money – It’s About Intentionality
Here’s what I’ve learned living in Berlin for the past years, talking to women who earn good money but somehow still feel financially stressed – at my work with fin:marie and in my private life:
The amount of money in your account does not always have something to do with whether you feel rich.
I know women making €80k a year who feel broke because they’re constantly white-knuckling their spending. And I know women making €40k who feel genuinely abundant because they’ve made peace with how they allocate their money.
And then I started asking myself: What’s the actual difference? And after some contemplation, I found an answer: Intention.
I have been assisting Karolina one time for a Financial Coaching, and that’s where I met Sophie [fake name for discretion, of course]. Back then, she was 34and, as far as I know, still works in tech – she used to feel guilty every time she spent money on herself. So she’d buy cheap things impulsively, then feel bad about the clutter.
Classic guilt-spending cycle, right? I used to do the same… buying, for example, the cheaper pair of shoes I actually found a tiny bit ugly, but was too afraid to spend an extra €50 on the ones I actually liked… well, and then?
Broken shoes after half a year… too cheap to get them repaired (since the repair would cost almost as much as a new pair), and well, you actually end up having to buy a new pair anyway. The more expensive ones would probably have lasted twice as long 🤦♀️.
But back to Sophie… here comes a brilliant hack:
After she talked to Karolina, she started a simple budgeting trick – she made a list of the five things that genuinely make her feel luxurious.
For her, it was: good coffee, nice skincare, one fancy dinner a month, books, and long mornings without an alarm.
Then she budgeted for them.
And what happened, suddenly she felt rich. Not because she had more money, but because every Euro she spent on those things felt intentional, planned and yes… it gave her the feeling to really OWN her money.
That’s the luxury mindset. It’s not about having unlimited money – I wish you had – believe me… but we should not fall into delusion 😀.
Our tool for successful budgeting is: It’s about knowing what makes you feel genuinely good — and making space for it. 🌌
The Budget Hacks That Actually Work
You see — our approach is rather realistic… I want to tell you what can really work, and we don’t want to get too involved with those ‘what if at some point… when I’ll be rich… in a few years’ thoughts. No — to stay tuned, we need to start now with a “what can I do today?” mentality.
Okay, let’s get practical. Here are your moves for reframing luxury – even when your money is a bit tight.
1. The Pleasure Budget — from “ugh, responsibility” to “oh, this actually feels good.”
This is the game-changer, for real. Instead of hoping you’ll have money left over for fun stuff (spoiler: you won’t), allocate it first – I mentioned that before… but what do I really mean by that?
So, you pick a number that feels real for you — maybe it’s €100/month, maybe €200. Call it your Pleasure Budget or your Joy Fund or whatever makes you smile (Pepa the Piggy Bank 🐷 😂).
Put it in your calendar like a transfer to savings. Then? Spend it guilt-free on whatever makes you feel good.
The magic isn’t in the amount. It’s in the permission. You’re not stealing from your financial goals — you’re including them.
How to start – there is this very effective and easy trick: Look at last month’s bank statement. And just… feel. Where did you feel genuinely happy about spending money?
That’s your blueprint ➡️ Budget for more of it, intentionally.
2. Quality Over Quantity – Especially When It “Saves” Money
This one sounds counterintuitive, but there is more, so stay with me 🙂.
One really good coffee ritual beats five mediocre espressos (or let’s call it hot dark water with bitter after taste) in an ugly paper cup that is thin and leaves your finger tips with red burned marks, agreed? ♨️
One quality of Lieblingscafé where you know the Barista and they know your order, beats randomly grabbing coffee from chains. One beautiful dinner with friends beats grabbing a greasy, overpriced sandwich five times in a row at a random Straßenbahn-Stop, right?
Why? Because your brain is actually wired to savour good moments, not to accumulate them.
And probably you would rather remember the moment with your friends than your 2 Minutes at the ‘Backshop’ stand, no? 😀
Neuroscience backs this up — we adapt quickly to more stuff, but we genuinely enjoy better experiences.
Plus? It’s cheaper. One €6 coffee you actually taste and enjoy, versus five €3 coffees you barely register? You’re spending less and feeling richer.
How to start: This week! Pick one small daily thing (coffee, lunch, your commute, your morning routine) and notice how it feels.
3. The Free Luxuries Hack – Your City Is Full of Them
Here’s the thing: most German cities – whether you’re in Berlin, Munich, Köln, or in Frankfurt – are packed with free or genuinely cheap luxury moments. You just need to know where to look.
A Sunday morning walk through Englischer Garten, passing by ducklings on the Eisbach, costs nothing but feels indulgent. Attending an exhibition opening is usually free, and you can socialize with many people who are interested in the same arts. Lying at the Mainufer on a summer evening with friends and a bottle of wine from the supermarket. A proper conversation at Maria’s place about your week full of work and family appointments, instead of dropping €40+ at a loud bar (where you don’t understand if she either met her mother or was going on a walk with her dog Bruno 🙉).
Here’s what they have in common: they’re intentional, present — and they cost almost nothing. Your brain doesn’t distinguish between ‘expensive luxury’ and ‘intentional luxury.’ It only knows: am I present right now? Am I enjoying this moment? And honestly? A free evening with good company feels way more luxurious than a rushed dinner you had to stress about affording.
How to start: Make a list of your favourite free or ultra-cheap things to do in your city. Don’t overthink it — what are the moments where you actually feel good? A walk? A gallery? Time with friends? A quiet morning? Now make those your go-to for when you want to feel rich. Notice how good they feel, and here’s the kicker: start doing them intentionally instead of by accident. That’s what makes them feel luxurious – and on top of it, you will feel maybe more connected to your needs as you truly think about what you really want 🧖♀️🌳.
4. Second-Hand Luxury – Because Quality Doesn’t Have a Timeline
One of my favourite secret moves: buying quality second-hand – or let’s rather say a piece with a soul.
A vintage linen dress from a Flohmarkt that costs maybe €15 instead of €150 new – and you will find amazing brands, you’d never think of buying maybe. I know I live in Berlin and flea markets are amazing in here, but honestly, we also have many people attending and wanting the same. So when I visited my friend in Freiburg one day, I had such great finds as well. You just have to keep your eyes peeled 🙂.
A leather bag from a consignment shop that’s already broken in. Beautiful ceramics from flea markets. Real Stöckelschuhe from the 90s at a fraction of the price from Vinted (seriously, this app can be addictive, but if used wisely – you can find amazing quality pieces for very good money).
It feels like hunting and gathering — which is fun — and you end up with better quality stuff because you’re being selective. Plus, there’s literally zero guilt because you spent way less.
How to start: Next weekend, check out your local flea market or consignment shop and set a budget. Maybe €30
And important (!!!)…
Don’t:
It’s not the way to start spending money on useless accessories that aren’t your style, and you never wear, just because they are cheap 😂 💰.
Do: Keep in mind to just buy what you really want and need, and see what quality things you can find – you’ll be shocked.
